The Philippines has world-famous spots for scuba travel and adventures. Recreational diving may be an expensive leisure pursuit, but there are ways on how to economize and experience the same thrills without spending much. In fact, some natives on Philippine coastal areas frequented by dive tours try doing the sport without the aid of modern-day diving equipment.

Apo Reef Natural Park
This spectacular coral reef system is the second largest in the world and one of the renowned dive sites in the country. The thirteen square miles (13 sq. mi) habitat of marine biodiversity is located off the west coast of Mindoro Occidental province. To protect aquatic resources in the Natural Park, government policy bans fishing within the reef. Tourism, on the other hand, is promoted to create a livelihood for the fisher folk and revenue for the reef’s conservation programs. Trip advisories suggest exploring the site during the dry months of December to January for stable weather conditions. There are more than ten popular drop-off dive locations that cater to the skill level of divers (beginner to experienced).

Verde Island
Another world-class diving destination located between Mindoro Oriental and the Luzon mainland is Isla Verde. The marine sanctuary was named “Center of the Center of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity” by marine ecologists in 2006. Efforts to ban fishing in the bays of Mindoro and Batangas intend to protect threatened species of marine life in the area. Down-currents run mild to strong. Diving in this is spot is recommended for those with more experience. Getting to the island would take an hour boat ride from Puerto Galera, Mindoro.

Tubbataha Reefs in Palawan
Exploring marine diversity in a World Heritage Site would be a gratifying adventure. The Palawan reefs abound in biodiversity and play a vital role in marine life conservation, as it is located in the Coral Triangle, a small part of the Pacific Ocean, yet the region is resilient to climate change. This area is home to more than a third of the planet’s fishes and three fourth of the world’s reef can be found making Tubbataha Reefs the biggest marine protected area in the Philippines.

Puerto Galera, Mindoro Oriental
This diving area with more than forty dive sites is considered the best in the country and in Asia as well. For nearly half a century, Puerto Galera’s ecological diversity has attracted scientific communities around the globe for underwater research, exploration, and photography.

Blue Hole in Tablas Island, Romblon
The Philippines has its own enigmatic marine sinkhole. Romblon’s Blue Hole is a recommended dive destination because it is not that frequented by tourists and commercial establishments. Other dive sites in Tablas Island worth exploring are Origon Rocks, Guindauahan Island, Peter’s Pinnacles, and Carmen’s Cliff.
